Self Assessment Is Vital

We had a great group this week. The verse from the big stage that we focused on was Luke 11:34...straight from Jesus' mouth.

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.

Britt (big stage speaker) challenged our guys on what they look at. What a great verse and what a great lesson. What we look at (also what we listen to) affects us...it affects our hearts as men and we have control over it. We have a choice.

As men, we know (most of the time) when we are doing something wrong. We know when we stumble across something and keep listening or watching, that when its over, we probably should have turned the other way. There is guilt associated with it or something just hits your radar afterward and you are ashamed. This is not a difficult concept to understand but it is so hard to live. How many times have you watched a movie that was just foul and you thought to yourself, "I should probably turn this off." For me, I struggle with this. There are some movies that make me laugh but I just should have never started it. I will say one thing, the times that I have gotten up and walked away always yielded an inner strength and confirmation of something good in me. I have never regretted it - never felt like I missed out.

Somehow, along the way, our conversation led to self assessment. We challenged the guys this week to ask themselves a question. "If there was one thing you could change about yourself what would it be?" We had a lot of transparency in the group from that question. Some things were uncontrollable...they did not have a choice. Others, they DO have a choice. That is a healthy tension. If it is a choice that you are making start trying to make the right choice. Just make the next "right" choice and start a win streak. Sooner or later that win streak will turn into a healthy habit of self assessment and realignment of your priorities.

What a great habit to build this early in life. Self assess, make the next right choice and when you don't...start over and keep trying.
